Carrel Smith was at his house, carving away at the wood of his latest project, when he heard a nock at the door. He walked up to it, feeling just a tiny bit irritated that he was interrupted, but too nice to let them nock a second time.
He was surprised to see Lyra at the door. “Oh, hey Lyra.” He said, not sure what to expect next. Most times he was around this mare, he ended up getting kissed. Luckily Carla was out getting stuff at the market, so Lyra would at least wait until she got back to embarrass Carrel in whatever way she planned.
That’s what he would be thinking about at least, if Lyra weren’t crying. “Woah! Lyra, are you alright?” She shook her head. “Come inside, tell me what’s going on.”
At the couch in his living room, not too far from the broken fourth wall, Lyra and Carrel sat down. Carrel wasn’t sure what was going on, but Lyra was one of his closest friends, and he’d do what he could to help.
"I asked Bon Bon to be my special somepony." She said, clearly holding back more tears.
"Then why are you so-" He stopped, realizing what she meant. "Wait… You you mean she-?"
She nodded again.
"She said no?"
Lyra cried. She couldn’t hold it back any more. The mare she had been loving from afar for so long didn’t love her back. It was heart breaking.
"But you two-" Carrel was blown away. He knew how much Lyra loved that mare. He and the Mod both read that story Lyra wrote about how they met. It was such a heart warming story, and it deserved a happy ending. But this wasn’t that happy ending, this was a tragedy, and Lyra was center stage. "How could she do that!?"
Lyra sniffled. “She’s asexual. She’s never had feelings of affection towards anypony. She hates the idea of love because she doesn’t understand it. She-” Lyra sniffled. “She was angry at me for what I said.”
She sat up straight. “If she just said she wasn’t a filly fooler, then at least I could turn myself into a stallion and win her heart that way. But now, no matter how much I try and change myself for her, I’ll never win her over.”
Carrel just sat there, taken aback by all of this. He heard of things not working out in relationships like this, he even had a girl run away on an adventure and never come back, leaving him heart broken. But what Lyra described was different, it was outright rejection. Angry rejection no less, and there was no way he could change it. “Lyra… I don’t know what to say.”
She looked nervous. “Carrel, there’s something I have to say.” She avoided making eye contact. “Remember when I laughed when your mod said he though I was attracted to you?”
"Oh gees… Lyra, I already told you, I forgive you. You said you were sorry, we hugged, I told you I forgave you, we did all of this already."
"Listen!" Lyra yelled. She had both anger and fear in her expression. "Ever since I got this meme magic, I’ve been changing. It turns out that whenever I’m shipped with somepony on the internet, I become more likely to be attracted to them!" She looked away. "Even if I removed the magic, the feelings I receive would still be there." She looked at Carrel. "Carrel, I knew that if she rejected me and there was no way of getting her to change her mind, all of my affections would be drawn to you. I’ve been shipped with you twice already!"
Carrel stared at her in shock. “What!?”
She got on her knees, and spoke pleadingly. “Carrel, I’m not asking you to become my coltfriend, and I know this is sudden. But right now my heart is broken, and I need help fixing it. Even if it’s just for today, even if it’s just one date, and even if you choose Trixie over me, I have to ask you!” She hesitated. “Will you be my special somepony?”
Carrel was left sitting there, locked in place from the shock of it all. Lyra really did like him? It wasn’t just some prank to get them kissing again? She really did like him? Had he already thought about that last part? Lyra really DID like him!! “I… I… I thought you liked mares!”
She blushed. “Well yes… But I think so long as the stallion is feminine enough I can still find them attractive. You’re… Kinda the most mare like stallion I’ve met.”
"Um… Thanks?" He said, still not sure what to make of this. It was so sudden. It came out of nowhere. But looking at her, he knew Lyra needed this. Most mares scared him to the point that he could never talk about this sort of thing, but since Lyra was a tomboy he found himself able to talk to her more easily. At the same time, Lyra also scared him more than any mare usually would. It was the paradoxical sort of feeling he got from her.
Should he say yes? If he did, would he ever like her back? He didn’t care. Lyra needed this. That was all that mattered. “Yes Lyra. I’ll… I’ll be your special somepony.”
Definitely not the best day ever. But it could’ve been worse.
